How to prevent osteoporosis

The aim is to reduce the risk of osteoporotic fractures as these lead to great medical expense and decreased quality of life.

Risk factors you can manage:

  • Maintain a healthy body weight (people who are too thin are at greater risk)
  • Reduce alcohol intake
  • Stop smoking
  • Maintain adequate levels of vitamin D and calcium intake in your diet
  • Exercise! If you are immobile or lead an inactive lifestyle you are at higher risk, as weight-bearing exercise keeps bones healthy and strong
  • Create a safe environment to reduce your risk of falls
