Why we need more women in the boardroom

The likes of Thuli Madonsela and Gill Marcus (and many more) are living proof that women in top and senior management positions have an important role to play.

But a quick look around the executive meeting room reveals an overwhelming male-dominated environment.

What stats reveal
Although at policy level South Africa is ahead, women still struggle to move from middle to senior management.

Studies have shown that South Africa ranked 54th out of 108 countries, in a survey showing women in management roles. Despite positive strides achieved, the proportion of women in senior positions has remained at 24% since 2007.

Not all’s lost
In the healthcare sector, women make up 80% of the workforce and just 40% of management. The representation of women within management levels in other sectors continues to show improvement albeit at a slow rate.

This indicates that there is more than enough room for improvement, especially in technical fields and across the male dominated industries such as the motor industry.

What needs to be done
There needs to be proper planning, creation and development of a strong multi-skilled pipeline of women. We need a high proportion of women who can perform critical functions across all business disciplines to ensure that opportunities at senior- and top-management levels are accessible to women.

Creating workplace environments conducive to the growth of women is another area which can contribute to more women in top management positions.
