New benefits for MISA members at RMI establishments

From the start of this year, MISA members who work at RMI establishments qualify for the new improved benefits, which are linked to the Sick, Accident & Maternity Pay Fund (SAF), an exclusive agreement negotiated between MISA and the RMI. We look at some of the most frequent asked questions.

What are the new improved benefits that MISA members who work at RMI establishments now qualify for?
Subject to eight consecutive weeks’ contributions, MISA members at RMI establishments qualify for an additional death and funeral benefit. The death benefit for the member is R10 000, while the following funeral benefit(s) will be paid.

  • The member: R10 000
  • The member’s spouse: R10 000
  • Children over the age of 18 who are registered as full-time students: R10 000
  • Children 14 - 18 years of age: R10 000
  • Children under 14 years of age: R7 000 

Are there any limitations on this benefit?
Yes, funeral benefits of R10 000 will be limited to the payment of three claims (which includes the payment of the Funeral Benefit for the member) per annum and in the event of Funeral Benefits of R7 000 a limitation of two claims per annum apply.

Do I still qualify for the 'normal' MISA Benefits?
Yes. You still qualify for the MISA Death benefit fund of R35 000 and the MISA Funeral Benefit Fund.

What are these benefits?
Subject to 26 weeks’ consecutive contributions, all active MISA members will automatically qualify for the MISA Death Benefit Fund. In the event of suicide, 104 weeks of contributions must have been received. Payments are made directly to the nominated beneficiary upon the death of a member and the benefits do not become assets in the deceased person’s estate.

Subject to one week’s contributions, all active MISA members qualify for the following MISA Funeral Benefit Fund benefits:

  • The member: R10 000
  • The member’s spouse: R10 000
  • Children over the age of 18 who are registered as full-time students or who are physically and/or mentally disabled: R10 000
  • Children 14 - 18 years of age: R10 000
  • Children under 14 years of age: R7 000

If you make use of AVBOB (a preferred provider) funeral claims will be guaranteed subject to specified conditions.

SICK, ACCIDENT AND MATERNITY BENEFIT FUND
MISA members at RMI establishments qualify for exclusive sick leave benefits under this agreement.

Sick Pay
Sick pay for ten days per annum at 100% of daily remuneration and thereafter an additional five days at 50% of daily remuneration.

Accident Pay
Accident pay for 40 days per annum at 75% of daily remuneration.


Maternity Benefits
Maternity benefits for female staff members at 30% of daily remuneration for 17 weeks.

Are these benefits subject to a waiting period?
Yes, the additional death and funeral benefit is subject to a waiting period of 8 weeks’ consecutive contributions.

Are there any additional costs to be paid?
No, there are no additional costs to be paid. The cost of the Sick, Accident & Maternity Benefit Fund is borne by the employer.

I don’t plan on having a baby any time soon. Do I need to belong to the fund?
As a MISA member at an RMI establishment, you do not pay extra for this benefit, as the cost is borne by the employer. Employers’ contribution for male staff members is also less than for female staff members.

How do I ensure that I qualify for the benefits?

Please note, that you need to be registered for this benefit by completing a registration form.

May NUMSA members and non-union members also belong to this fund?
NUMSA members as well as Non-Union employees may be admitted to the Fund voluntarily. In the event of the employer contributing towards SAF, NUMSA members and Non-union employees also qualify for the SAF Death and Funeral Benefit.

MISA MEMBERS AT NON-RMI ESTABLISHMENTS


What are the benefits to MISA members at non-RMI establishments?
MISA members at non-RMI establishments qualify for the normal MISA Benefit Fund to which all active MISA members automatically belong, and which pays out in the unfortunate event of the death of the principal member.

Subject to 26 weeks’ consecutive contributions, all active MISA members will automatically qualify for the MISA Death Benefit Fund. In the event of suicide, 104 weeks of contributions must have been received. Payments are made directly to the nominated beneficiary upon the death of a member and the benefits do not become assets in the deceased person’s estate.

Contributions
The weekly contribution towards SAF increases by R3.50 per week from
1 January 2018.


In 2018, the total new contribution for female members will be R25.55 and R18.49 for male members.

Please note that this amount is payable by the employer and must not be deducted from the Employee’s salary.

Important to note
Participation in the Fund is restricted to paid-up members of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI) only, with membership to SAF being compulsory for employees who are members of the Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA).
